As a General Practice Resident, Dr. Hammond received advanced training in many speciality disciplines of dentistry. Here, he became interested in oral and maxillofacial surgery. It was also during the GPR year that his second daughter, Leigh, was born. Leigh, like Amy, instantly became a source of inspiration and pride.

After the internship year in San Diego, the family was transferred to Iwakuni, Japan where Dr. Hammond served for three years as a general dental officer in the U.S. Navy Dental Corp. Dr. Hammond served as the clinic oral surgeon for much of that tour so his oral surgery experience and interest grew tremendously during these years.

After three wonderful years in Iwakuni, Japan, Dr. Hammond returned to San Diego and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency in 1983 at San Diego Naval Hospital where he served with some of the finest oral and maxillofacial surgeon mentors in the world. He developed a special interest in bone graft reconstruction of the jaws that continues today.

He served as the head of oral surgery at the Naval Hospital Guantanomo Bay, Cuba after completion of the residency. In 1985, after leaving Guantanomo Bay and retiring from the active duty Navy, Dr. Hammond returned to San Diego to start a private practice. He joined the group of Drs. Golec, Cutri, Maw, and Berger. The experience gained from working with these fine surgeons was the spring board to the development of a new practice in Mission Valley. In 1992, Dr. Hammond opened the doors to Mission Valley Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Inc.

Today, Dr. Hammond’s professional interests lean toward dental implants and bone graft preparation for dental implants. He also enjoys orthognathic surgery and jaw reconstruction as well as more routine dental oral surgery such as wisdom teeth and dental extractions. He is a member of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, the California Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, and the California Dental Association.

Dr. Hammond loves his profession and especially enjoys the many wonderful patients for whom he is privileged to care.

Outside of the office, he enjoys playing tennis and has won numerous trophies and awards for tournament victories. When not on the tennis court with his wife, Kathy or friends, he enjoys traveling, photography, Jimmy Buffett music, and the beautiful beaches of San Diego and around the world.
